Part of possibly the most highly anticipated game launch in history, Cyberpunk 2077 online multiplayer will be a separate part of the experience.
After many, many delays and disappointments, we can expect to cruise the streets of Night City very soon.
Set for release next week, Cyberpunk 2077 has been confirmed as an offline single-player RPG experience.
However, the game’s developer, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that an online version of the game has been in development since 2019.
Similar to what GTA Online has done for GTA 5, the aim of Cyberpunk 2077 Online is to provide a multiplayer experience outside of the main game narrative.
It has been confirmed that new content will be available for purchase in the online version but exactly what this will be is just a guess at the moment.
The developer has also confirmed that there will be no microtransactions in the single-player game and DLC will be free.
Currently, CD Project Red is reporting that the multiplayer will also be a standalone product, which indicates that the base game single-player experience won’t be required for access.
However, whether it will be free or not hasn’t yet been made clear but it has been stated that owners of the main game will be able to access the online version for free.
That being said, the developer is relying on the multiplayer version for long-lasting revenue, so exactly how much content will be free is anyone’s guess.
CDPR has recently confirmed that the online version shouldn’t even be called a “mode” since it is so big and expansive.
It is so large in fact that it has its own development team outside of the main game.
The devs of the main campaign apparently have nothing to do with the development of online which is being treated as a separate AAA development in its own right.
While there are no specific details on either any upcoming DLC or the online version of Cyberpunk 2077, we do know that they aren’t arriving any time soon.
It has been confirmed that the DLC won’t be arriving until some time after launch, well into 2021, and multiplayer is expected sometime in 2022.
Cyberpunk 2077 is an upcoming futuristic sci-fi title based on an RPG tabletop board game.
The style of the game takes many queues from popular science fiction franchises, most notably Blade Runner and The Matrix as well as more obscure movies like Johnny Mnemonic and Strange Days.
Playing as a mercenary, you can navigate the murky waters of Night City, the world’s largest standing city following a nuclear war.
Organized and corporate crime are rampant as technology ravages modern culture and dehumanizes the population as they upgrade themselves with tech.
How you play and who you trust is entirely up to you as you forge your own destiny as a player in Night City.
The Cyberpunk 2077 release date is scheduled for December 10, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
