Following the embarrassing and botched launch of what was supposed to be the best game ever made more bad news has been reported as Cyberpunk 2077 save files can become corrupted.
Released earlier this month on December 10, Cyberpunk 2077 has caused quite a stir in the gaming community.
The game had been in development for almost ten years and was promoted by a glossy marketing campaign for years.
Upon release, however, it was evident that the game was unfinished and contained a myriad of bugs, including crashes and extremely poor performance.
Most of the performance issues were reported on last-gen consoles, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, however, even those with high-end PCs and next-gen machines also reported issues.
The main problems were to do with visual performance on PS4 and Xbox One where the graphics were run on “Potato Mode”.
This meant that there was a lot of texture pop-in and detail rendering issues.
The problems have been so bad that a record amount of refunds have been requested and Sony has pulled the game from PlayStation Store.
The game’s developer, CD Projekt RED, has been working hard to fix the bugs and has released two hotfixes that sorted most of the more serious issues.
I have been lucky myself as my game has been OK on PS4 apart from the random crashes and the odd bit of floating text.
However, it has now been reported that should a save file become greater than 8MB then the save might become permanently corrupt.
Reportedly, a large save file can happen for people who have a large number of items in their inventories.
This is bad news for collectors and crafters who need to store materials and items in order to sell amongst the game’s economy.
The corrupt file will permanently break the game and you will be forced to load an earlier save.
For now, CDPR has advised players not to store too much in their inventories in order to combat the bug.
In a snarky comment, the developer has stated that the game engine wasn’t designed for gamers who like to grind in order to make money.
This may be referring to a known duplication glitch that has allowed some players to make a billion dollars in the game by repeatedly spawning and selling items.
It seems that exploiting this glitch can have a severe impact on the game’s system.
This is just another problem that CDPR is having to try to sort out as it has also been announced that they may face legal action by investors after having been lied to about the game’s development.
Even with its myriad of problems, Cyberpunk 2077 is still a great game at heart.
I have been patiently working through the bugs to find a rich game world bursting with character and intrigue.
If you have the patience to play through then I encourage you to pick up the game and put any negative press aside.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
