Fans of Japanese RPG games have been treated at the Tokyo Game Show as the rumored NieR Replicant remake gets a release date.
Considered one of the best JRPG games of all time, the new NieR Replicant is a NieR Automata prequel.
It has been confirmed that the game has been completely rebuilt from the ground up in order to bring the NieR Replicant experience for modern PS4, Xbox One and PC gamers.
Officially titled “NieR Replicant Ver. 1.22474487139“, the remake was announced to coincide with the original release’s 10th anniversary at the Tokyo Game Show.
Originally, the game was only released in Japan, with its sequel NieR Automata seeing a full Western release.
To further add to the confusion, there were two different titles for each console.
They were known in Japan as NieR Replicant as a PS3 exclusive and NieR Gestalt on Xbox 360 when they were originally released in 2010.
Gestalt was eventually released in the United States were it was known only as NieR.
The difference between Nier and Nier Replicant is massive since the game has been completely redeveloped by Square Enix.
To quell anybody’s fears of a cheap remaster, Square Enix has confirmed that the same team from the original game have developed Nier Replicant 1.2.
Reportedly, the story and quests have been expanded, the game world has been overhauled and the combat system has been redesigned to feel more like NieR Automata.
This is probably an attempt to make the game more accessible to Western gamers who are used to playing Automata.
NieR Automata has sold over 4 million copies worldwide and has played a significant role in opening up Japanese action RPGs to gamers outside of Japan.
Presented as a third-person, action RPG, hack and slash game NieR sees you take control of the titular character as he embarks on a dangerous adventure to save his daughter, Yonah.
While the game was not received well by many online gaming sites such as Gamespot and IGN, the series has become legendary in its own right with a massive following.
It has a very heavily stylized Eastern visual presentation like other games similar to NieR Automata such as the Devil May Cry series.
In stark comparison, NieR Automata performed considerably better with scores of 9 out of 10 from Gamespot and Destructoid.
NieR Automata is set thousands of years after the events of Replicant and the main character is not NieR and is in fact a female android named 2B.
There are also two other android characters that are playable at any point in the story and you are able to switch between the three.
The sequel is more of a post-apocalyptic setting with a plot that resonates better with Western audiences.
