Review – Shadow of the Colossus

By | 23/02/2018

Created by the same team as the wonderfully designed and breathtaking adventure of love, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus was originally released in 2005 (Japan) and then 2016 in Europe for the Playstation 2 and won numerous accolades, one of which was that the game may actually be one of the greatest ever made.

Thirteen years later and the game has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of the cult hit nostalgia pit to once again cast its colossal shadow over the other current Playstation 4 chart games, this re-master is certainly shaping up to be one of the best new games of 2018, and just as large as Sony Interactive Entertainment might have hoped, sitting firm at the number three spot. It is just bad luck that positions one and two are held by Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Fifa 18 respectively.

The updated re-master of Shadow of the Colossus was re-made completely from the ground up, and it shows, since the visuals are absolutely stunning. Textures, ligting and rendering techniques have all been improved and applied for current generation configurations giving the game a much more realistic and deep look.

The scale and ambition of the game, thanks to the updated visuals really shows through as you get a sense of the foreboding doom that lurks around every corner.

Never has a game been able to capture the glory of epic monster battles which will have your thumbs sore, your eyes raw and breath held, all as you feel the elation of felling a Colossi.

The beatifully remastered version of Shadow of the Colossus for the Playstation 4 feels like a new game in and of itself thanks to the effort of the developers to breathe new life into a classic game.

However, the game still holds some of the same issues as the original, namely the infamously clunky controls and determined camera which have still not been resolved since the core code of the game has been re-used.

Shadow of the Colossus (2018) has sold tens of thousands of copies and holds the number three position on the Playstation 4 charts as of 17/02/2018. You can view the current Playstation 4 chart games here.
