Well, now that 2018 is over and 2019 is finally here, at ChartX Games I have compiled a list of (ten of what I believe are) the best upcoming PS4 Games of 2019. This is Part 1 of that list, showcasing five of the best titles for the first quarter of the year:

  • Resident Evil 2 (Remaster)
  • Dead or Alive 6
  • Anthem
  • Devil May Cry 5
  • Days Gone

2018 was a massive year for gaming, with the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 to name a few of the year’s hit AAA titles, all of which have helped push sales of Sony’s PlayStation towards legendary proportions [1] while also contributing to the UK video games industry now being worth more in sales than movies and music combined [2].

The PlayStation 4 had a great year for new IP in 2018 and 2019 looks set to have more of the same, with some great new sequels and remakes thrown in to the mix.

Please note that the order of the list does not denote any bias and the titles are simply ordered by release date.

Resident Evil 2 – Survival Horror Returns

Riding on the back of the hugely successful remaster of legendary horror title Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2 has now become very highly anticipated, and, if the latest trailer is anything to go by, we won’t be disappointed.

Following a viral outbreak in Raccoon City, Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy must work together to survive the horror and stop it from reaching the outside.

Developed by Capcom using the RE Engine, Resident Evil 2 makes a shattering comeback.

Combining action-packed story sequences with Resident Evil’s staple puzzle solving, RE2 thrusts players into a nightmare world where both brains and brawn are required if you want to make it out alive!

  • Separate story campaigns for Claire and Leon.
  • Re-worked graphics, animation and audio.
  • Re-vamped controls.
  • Immersive shoulder-cam.

Resident Evil 2 is expected on 25th January 2019 and is available for pre-order now at CD Keys with a 19% discount.

Dead or Alive 6 – Bikini Combat at It’s Best

Current generation platforms are in for a slick new contender to the combat genre and promises more of the same action-focused fighting, now with less bouncy boobs!

Set immediately after the events of Dead or Alive 5, DoA 6 sees a multi-narrative story with crossing story arcs in an epic saga rarely seen in a AAA combat title.

Developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo, Dead or Alive 6 looks to be a stunning comeback for the series.

A whole host of new game mechanics have been added to the series as well as new combatants, visual upgrades and current generation physics.

  • New graphics engine allows visible sweat, facial expressions and dirt.
  • Strike/Throw/Hold combat triangle system calls for strategic planning during matches.
  • Powerful new systems such as Break Blow, Break Hold and Fatal Rush, that can turn the tide of a fight.
  • Sexuality and sexualization in DoA 6 has been toned down.

Dead or Alive 6 is expected on 1st March 2019 and a lot more information is available at the official website.

Anthem – A Whole New World

Perhaps one of the most interesting IPs to come along in a while, Anthem is on course to either be one of the greatest games ever, or a complete failure depending on whether the developers can pull off this very ambitious game.

In a world ravaged by now absent Gods, human survivors struggle to defend themselves against colossal monsters and the savage environment itself.

Developed by BioWare and published by game industry powerhouse Electronic Arts, Anthem is among the first shared open-world action/adventure titles with a truly immersive gaming environment.

Anthem combines an epic story combined with third person mechanics and action, as well as a game world of immense scale and detail as never seen before.

  • Harness the power of “Javelin” exo-suits to aid in combat and exploration.
  • Play your own way in single player, multi-player or co-op modes.
  • Utilise your skill to slay gigantic beasts.
  • Shared world experience allows everyone to experience the same weather, time and events.

Anthem is expected on 22nd February 2019 and is available for pre-order now at CD Keys with a 36% discount.

Devil May Cry 5 – Hack and Slash Get’s Sexy

Another massive series for Capcom, hack and slash king Devil May Cry 5 is set to return in 2019 to battle a new horror and has been slated to be the DMC title fans have been waiting for.

As a Demon Tree grips Red Grave City, it is up to Nero along with his mechanical “Devil Breaker” arms to take on the hordes of horrific beasts and Demons alike such as Empusa and Goliath.

Both developed and published by Capcom, DMC 5 is also powered by Capcom’s RE Engine (developed for Resident Evil 7) promising to provide the most realistic looking Devil May Cry environments yet with stunning visuals and a world class physics system as well as a true DMC immersion experience from well-known game director Hideako Itsuno.

Devil May Cry 5 shows all the signs of being probably the best DMC yet with photo-realism, ground-breaking hack and slash combat as well as one of a kind story only Devil May Cry can offer.

  • Play as Devil May Cry veteran characters such as Nero, Dante and Nico.
  • Hack and slash enemies in shattering sword and gun action and cut-scenes with a thrash metal soundtrack that DMC is known for.
  • Utilize massive combos to get in-game benefits via Style.
  • Use Style to obtain Red Orbs and unlock powerful new items and abilities.

Devil May Cry 5 is expected on 8th March 2019.

Days Gone – The Oregon Trail, But Not as You Know It

Another survival horror thrown in to the mix and the first PlayStation exclusive on the list, Days Gone is the best post-apocalyptic, zombie action we are likely to get, this side of being an extra in The Walking Dead.

As most of the world’s population has become a zombie-like “Freaker” following a massive global pandemic of biblical proportions, former Bounty Hunter Deacon St. John is doing his best to survive in this now hell-hole of a world.

Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and developed by SIE Bend Studio, the world of Days Gone has an amazingly ambitious scope and scale, utilizing the Unreal Engine 4 with the power of PlayStation 4 with world-class art and game direction, Days Gone promises to be one of the most immersive game worlds yet created.

Surviving an apocalypse has never been so much fun, yet so terrifying, as you battle the undead, the elements and even zombie animal “Freakers”.

  • Explore the desolate wastes of the Pacific Northwest in search of survival and indeed humanity.
  • Utilize the world and weather to your advantage while being aware of the disadvantages.
  • Travel vast distances on your trusty motorcycle, seeking out new people and places.
  • Develop relationships in the name of survival and beware of encroaching enemies.

NOTE: Read an excellent FAQ at Push Square for more information on Days Gone.

Days Gone is expected on 26th April 2019 and is a Sony PlayStation 4 exclusive.

That’s The First Quarter Taken Care Of

The coming months in the first quarter of 2019 are looking pretty solid in terms of AAA titles to look forward to with something for just about everyone when you include:

  • Horror; Resident Evil 2, Days Gone
  • Action; Devil May Cry 5, Anthem
  • Combat; Dead or Alive 6

Obviously there are more games than this that will be released and honorable mentions include:

  • The Walking Dead: The Final Season
  • Kingdom Hearts 3
  • Far Cry 5: New Dawn DLC

Resident Evil 2 should live up to standard if the remake of Resident Evil is anything to go by, which has been hugely successful for Capcom, and should whet your appetite for Days Gone, which is promising to be a nice supplement to the zombie apocalypse theme.

But if some third-person action and open world exploration is more your thing then DMC 5 and Anthem should provide you with two solid choices. You can go with Devil May Cry 5 to satisfy those quick-play hack and slash action sequence urges to relieve some stress and get some great eye candy while doing it (all the while rocking out to some thrash metal) or you for a more immersive experience you could take a sci-fi detour to another world and explore the multi-faceted shared experiences of ambitious new IP Anthem from Electronic Arts.

Then while you are coming down from Injustice 2 yet eagerly awaiting Mortal Kombat 11, Dead or Alive 6 should provide you with some combat sustenance with a new story, fighters and excellent new game mechanics, while shoving some overly-sexualized characters in your face.

Let me know what you think of this list and I may consider editing it or adding some new games to the article.

Thanks for reading and look out for Part 2 of this list of the best upcoming PS4 games of 2019, which will be coming your way in the coming months.

Cheers,
Michael.

I’m no gamer, but I have a giant friend network who is. They would find Anthem to be the most interesting of the bunch here, as it sounds like something that’s post-apocalyptic in nature, which is right up their alley. It’s funny because they would agree with you 100% about the predicted outcome of the game whether it’s a complete boom or bust. I do know for a fact it’s something I can see them buying and staying up until the early hours of the morning playing. While I don’t play video games, games that have a plot and a story mode are a lot of fun to read about and even watch videos on of other gamers going through a campaign or even online play.

Thanks for the great comments Tod.

If your friends are gamers then they will indeed be looking forward to Anthem.

The scope, scale and ambition of this game is something that has been attempted only a handful of time with games such as Destiny and Elder Scrolls Online.

I will of course have more on Anthem when it is released very soon.

      Thanks,
      Michael.
