Major online games free updates have been released this week for the best battle royale games including Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Overwatch and Apex Legends.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 adds New Game Mode for PC and Xbox One
PC and Xbox One players are now able to take part in the super-fun new multiplayer modes as part of the Operation Apocalypse Z: Survivors DLC.
Having released on PlayStation 4 in July, the DLC is now available for all PC and Xbox One Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 players.
Since then, the development team at Treyarch has been able to use PS4 player feedback to fine-tune the game and iron out some of the kinks.
In a recent press release statement, here’s what Treyarch had to say:
“We’ve had a ton of fun playing Pandemic both here at the studio and online with all of you, and we’ve made some new tuning changes based on community feedback and game data to help out the infected team’s chances of victory“.
So while it may at first appear to have been unfair that PS4 players got the DLC first, they have more or less been used for testing which means that although PC and Xbox One players have had to wait a little longer, they ultimately get a more refined product.
Operation Apocalypse Z: Survivors DLC brings with it some amazing new game modes and an excellent story.
Blackout has received the new “Pandemic” mode, an 80-player free for all which has players respawn as a zombie when they are killed.
Multiplayer has the new mode “Infected: Final Stand” which has player teams alternating between survivors and zombies.
Finally, Zombies mode has received a new Gauntlet mode called “Duck and Cover” that sees players competing in a 30 round challenge at Camp Edward.
The tuning changes mentioned by Treyarch include:
- Faster infected movement
- Improved infected attack range
- Stronger infected fire resistance
- Quicker final Collapse times
Treyarch states that these changes have been implemented for a better experience by allowing infected teams to reach their targets faster and have a better chance of survival against well-fortified survivors.
The update also includes new weapons such as the M16 Tactical Rifle, additions to the Contraband Stream and new Specialists.

Developed by Treyarch and published by Activision, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is the latest addition to the massive Call of Duty franchise.
What sets this particular version apart is that the developers chose to forego the traditional story mode and opted for a fully online and multiplayer experience that includes Battle Royale, Blackout and Zombies mode.
Since release, the game has had several major DLC updates that have added new multiplayer stories, Specialists, weapons and vehicles.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Overwatch Gets a Major Update
Players of massively popular Battle Royale title Overwatch have been given a major new update for the game across PS4, Xbox One and PC bringing fixes, improved game mechanics and a new character.
Players will be pleased to know that a brand new role system has been implemented that allows gamers to choose which role they want to play before starting a game.
The system places gamers in a queue according to their chosen role as Tank, Damage or Support of which there is a 2 role system per game, i.e. 2 of each role with another limit being that only Heroes within a specific role can be played.
Should gamers have to queue for a limited role then the game will reward random items to players.
Another big addition to the game is the new Hero, Sigma.
Sigma is described as an “eccentric astrophysicist” and is a new Tank class Hero with powerful abilities that are able to manipulate gravity and upend the known laws of physics.
Because of abilities such as Hyperspheres, Kinetic Grasp and Gravitic Flux Sigma has the ability to force a team to completely rethink their strategy when in battle.
Sigma’s abilities include:
- Hyperspheres – gravity charges that implode and cause great damage to anyone within their radius.
- Experimental Barrier – a floating shield of energy that deflects all damage.
- Kinetic Grasp – projectiles can be stopped mid-trajectory and used as shields.
- Accretion – by manipulating the local gravity field, objects can be thrown at enemies.
- Gravitic Flux – an anti-gravity ability that allows Sigma to fly while sending enemies skyward and then slammed into the ground.
Other Hero updates have also been made to the game.
The cost of Global Ultimates has now been increased by 12% in order to reduce the rate at which matches are won by using Global Ultimates.
Hostile and friendly Slowing Effects are now stacked separately with movement speed being set by the slower effect.
A full damage bug has now been fixed for beam weapon damage abilities such as Zarya’s and Symmetra’s primary beam weapons.
Fixes and adjustments have also been made to the following Heroes:
- Wrecking Ball
Fixes and adjustments include damage increases or reductions, activation time adjustments, stun duration changes and healing effect variances as well as many more.
The game has also received a massive list of bug fixes across the board.
Overwatch is a massively popular online team-based Battle Royale game where players compete in a 6 v 6 contest of elimination.
Overwatch allows players to choose from a roster of fun and interesting characters each with their own unique quirks and abilities.
The game’s characters are divided into what role they are suited to whether it be a Tank designed to take damage, Damage designed to give damage or Support designed for healers.
Developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, Overwatch was launched in 2016 and has quickly become one of the most played online games and is a largely played e-Sport title.
Overwatch is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Apex Legends Adds Controversial Solo Mode
Battle Royale game newcomer and surprise smash hit Apex Legends has had a new update that includes a Solo Mode, a new in-game currency and a ton of new skins.
Dubbed “The Iron Crown Collection”, the latest Apex Legends event is now live and includes themed skins for characters such as a post-apocalyptic look, Pirate themes and even a Medieval style.
There are also some very limited Epic and Legendary cosmetics that require users to play through the new event.
In addition, in order to unlock any of the new skins and items, players must have played through the new Iron Crown Challenges to be rewarded with a new currency known as Iron Crowns in order to purchase the new items.
However, gamers are becoming a little dismayed as Iron Crowns can also be purchased using Apex Coins, but at an extortionate 700 Apex Coins per pack over the usual 100 for standard packs.
In some welcome news, the game has implemented a new Solo Mode that allows players to go it alone without a squad for the duration of a game.
This is great news for lone wolf type players, however the mode is not permanent and will only last until The Iron Crown event is over.
Perhaps though this is a testing period for the mode to return at a later date.
Developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts, Apex Legends burst onto the Battle Royale scene at the start of the year and has been a great success.
Likened to Fortnite with better features, the game is a quasi-Spin-off title set in the gaming universe of Respawn’s hit Titanfall series and is rumored to have started life as a sequel to Titanfall 2.
However, the developers decided to jump on the Battle Royale bandwagon and the decision has paid off massively.
Apex Legends reportedly surpassed 50 million players in the first month of release, something which Fortnite took almost 2 years to achieve.
Apex Legends is available completely free for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Origin.
