Battle Royale newcomer Apex Legends is an absolute blast with some very fresh ideas injected into the experience, and brings AAA quality FPS action to an otherwise boring genre.

It looks like Fortnite may have an actual contender as a new addition to the Battle Royale gaming world has a new addition.

Apex Legends is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with, having only been out for one week, the game has already got 25 million active players[1].

Developed by Respawn Entertainment of the Titanfall series of games and published by gaming giant Electronic Arts, Apex Legends has wowed critics and gamers alike, even more so given that the title was unannounced and had a surprise launch last week, and also that this AAA online game is absolutely free.

Here is my impression of Apex Legends based upon my expectations from the game, my experiences and my honest and unbiased opinion. Please note that this is not a review. Read on and enjoy the article. Played on PlayStation 4.

So, What’s the Story?

Following the Frontier War of Titanfall 2, nothing was left, so most people moved to the Outlands. However, just like the days of old, pioneers, explorers and outlaws alike compete for their opportunities to take anything of value that they can find, while making some money and a little bit of fame, in a brooding new blood sport known as the Apex Games.

Apex Legends is set in the Titanfall universe, a double hit game series from the same developer, however the game doesn’t allow you to pilot any of the awesome, giant Mechs from Titanfall.

Meet the Legends

Instead, you get to play as an established “Legend”, 30 years after Titanfall 2. Each of these Legends, of which there are 8, have unique skills and abilities and are grouped into diverse roles of either Offense, Defense, Support and Recon.

Each Legend’s Special Abilities are as follows:

  • Bangalore; Rolling Thunder – call in an artillery strike.
  • Bloodhound; Beast of The Hunt – move quicker and show enemies.
  • Caustic; Nox Gas Grenade – spread a toxic gas in the vicinity.
  • Gibraltar; Defensive Bombardment – targeted mortar strike.
  • Lifeline; Care Package – supply drop of defensive gear.
  • Mirage; Vanishing Act – deploys decoys and cloaks.
  • Pathfinder; Zip Line Gun – deploy a zip line usable by anyone.
  • Wraith; Dimensional Rift – create a tunneled portal for 60 seconds.

The game matches you to 2 other players which make up your squad. There are 19 other squads, which makes for a 60 player skirmish on the game map.

Welcome to the New Frontier

Upon starting a new match, a random selection turn is assigned to each player which will determine whether or not you are able to choose the Legend you want.

When the game starts, all players are deposited from a drop ship and must make their way to a landing spot, following a “Jump Leader” who is randomly assigned from the squad, or choosing to go it alone.

Just like other Battle Royale games, once landed, you must first look for weapons to use since you start with nothing. This is probably the most important aspect of the game as it will determine your ability to defend your self.

Once you have found a weapon, and maybe some armor and items, you (and/or your squad) can then get to finding advantageous positions and engaging in combat. Be warned though, if you want good weapons, items and lots of ammo, you will have to look hard for them.

As an added tactical incentive, you can only carry two weapons at a time, however you can swap out any weapons you wish at any time.

Memorizing some of the best map locations is all well and good, however you will need to fully engage the map since your jump location is randomly assigned with each new game, making some parts of the map more difficult to get to from the start.

Combat in Apex Legends is some of the best I have ever seen in an online game, being of the quality expected in a large AAA title such as Halo or Call of Duty, and the game engine allows for a very fast pace and frantic action.

Harking back to classic tactical shooter, Apex Legends brings back original FPS action reminiscent of Unreal and Quake; where being very fast and utilizing crouches, jumps and circling is absolutely imperative. It’s brilliant!

The game also adds an extra sense of urgency by including an ever shrinking ring, similar to Fortnite’s storm. You must avoid being caught in the Ring’s shrinkage, all the while planning your tactical combat moves.

While the game encourages squad play, and that is how the game is best played, you can go it alone and just try to get your kills, but be aware that there are some extremely talented players out there who already know the best spots and the best weapons.

That being said, there are some unique features to the game which can aid you greatly in combat:

Pinging – Command Your Squad

You can signal areas of interest to your squad or give basic commands such as “Let’s Go Over There” by Pinging to your squad. By aiming your cross hairs over an item or area, the game will call a context-sensitive action, such as Pinging a weapons cache, This will not only give a verbal notification to your squad, but will highlight it on their map.

Respawn Banner – Resurrection is Key

Another great feature is the Respawn Banner. This allows you to pick up a fallen comrade’s banner and take it to a respawn point. If successful, your dead squad-mate will be revived and respawned into the game like nothing ever happened.

This also provides another tactical element to the game, because although it initially seems like an advantage, enemies who are aware of this will watch for you taking the chance and subsequently try to finish you off.

Weapons  – Go Equipped

The game’s weapons are your standard fayre; rifles, pistols and throwable ordnance. However, all weapons in the game can be upgraded on the fly by finding loot such as advanced sniper scopes and rifle stocks, improving accuracy, power etc.

Apex Legends Weapons Selection

There are 6 weapons types:

  • Assault Rifle
  • Sub Machine Gun
  • Light Machine Gun
  • Sniper Rifle
  • Shotgun
  • Pistol

Of the 6 weapon types there are 3 models and each model has a lot of variants and skins which can be unlocked through game play or purchased.

Battle Royale Evolved

When Apex Legends was shockingly simultaneously announced and released on the same day last week, I was eager with excitement and anticipation after hearing it was set in the Titanfall universe.

However, my excitement quickly turned to dismay when I went to the official website to look it up and learned that it was a Battle Royale game, and I instantly thought “Great, another Fortnite”. I am neither a Battle Royale fan, nor a Fortnite supporter.

That being said, I do run a gaming blog and I had to respect the game and at least try it out to see if I could possibly write about it and include it on my blog.

Although the game presents itself as a Battle Royale, which it is, it is pretty clear, rather quickly though, that Apex Legends is not the Battle Royale next door. It’s bigger, better and bolder and it’s quite clear that Respawn Entertainment have worked hard to bring a high fidelity FPS title into the Battle Royale genre, with astounding results:

  • The graphics are polished to a tee.
  • The game play is fluid and dynamic.
  • Squad play is awesome fun.
  • Character design and development is astounding.
  • Special abilities set this game apart.
  • The map is large and highly detailed.
  • Weapons are various and extremely fun.
  • Every match really is different.
  • Each match furthers your understanding of the game’s mechanics.

This is one game I am currently enjoying and I can’t wait for more content.

All I can say to Respawn and EA is well done and thank you. It’s a game to be proud of.

Wow! Awesome information here! I’m definitely going to check this game out! I still love Fortnite but I’m looking for something fresh and new to add to my game library. How long does it take to get comfortable with the weapons and to understand each characteristic of each Legend character?

Thanks again! I’ll be giving this one a try soon!

      Hi Bob.

This is a great alternative to Fortnite.

Many have tried, many have failed, but this is one game that takes Battle Royale to another level.

If you have ever played any good FPS like DOOM, Quake or even Call of Duty, you will feel right at home with Apex Legends.

The look and feel of the game is a little more serious than Fortnite, choosing photo-realistic textures over Fortnite’s cartoonish, cell shading.

The characters themselves are great fun to play because each one has different abilities, speed etc.

The Special Abilities are awesome. You won’t believe me until you try it, but using Pathfinder to make zip lines is great fun, and Mirage’s portal ability is amazing.

Give it a go. It’s completely free, so you have no excuse. 😀

Have fun Bob and thanks for commenting,

I also agree that the graphics look amazing and it is definitely a step up and I wonder something. When the graphics are this good do you think that the company will use the same graphic design for other games as well?

    1. Michael Gore Post author

      Thanks for commenting.

Graphics across multiple games are usually used by the same company.

They develop, or in some cases license the graphics engine (such as Unreal Engine) for use in their games.

EA uses their own engine called DICE Frostbite for their current generation games, so it’s fair to assume that this engine will be used for upcoming games.

This sounds like it brings in elements of Fortnite, Overwatch, and League of Legends in a big mash up!

I know some of my friends who can’t stand Fortnite (or battle royale games in general) don’t like the way it undermines the FPS experience with chance elements, things like whether you find good weapons and all the tower fights that happen. Personally I think the game inadvertently created a unique, if somewhat limiting, strategic fighting style that I don’t mind at all. I always like creativity and resourcefulness over simple skill tests.

I’ll be curious to see what sorts of gaming styles and strategies players end up honing in Apex Legends. With so many aspects of different battle royale titles, I can see why it’s drawing a huge crowd.

      Thanks for commenting Sharon.

      I agree with you 100%.

Apex has shades of all of these games and then creates something unique with them and the game has already got over 25 million players.
